The trip that never quite happens

It is not a fall. That is the thing people get wrong about it. Your toe clips the edge of the hall rug, your weight goes forward half an inch, and you catch it. Nothing happens. You carry on.
But you have started walking with your eyes down. Down the hall, down the street, down the aisle at the supermarket. And you are tired at the end of it in a way that has nothing to do with the distance.
What most people are already doing
Most people manage it by managing themselves — shorter walks, flatter routes, a hand near the wall, the good shoes only. Some have tried a rigid plastic brace and found it lives in a cupboard because it does not fit in an ordinary shoe.
What changed
The Step-Lift is fabric and elastic, about as thick as a sock. One strap runs from an ankle cuff over the top of your foot and gently holds your toes up as your leg swings through. You set the strap once, then it goes on like a sock and disappears inside your usual shoe.
